Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Baton Rouge public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Residential noise ordinance decibel limits
New residential decibel limits passed as amended at 70 daytime/60 nighttime, born from a lost lawsuit over loud parties. Police still lack decibel meters, so enforcement may lag.
public safety / National Guard deployment
Baton Rouge’s mayor-president says the National Guard could be brought in to back up local police, not take over patrols. It’s a watch item because it affects who’s on your streets and how public safety resources get used.
EMS blood supply contract
After the previous blood-products deal fell through, EMS got a new emergency-approved contract with The Blood Center so paramedics can keep giving lifesaving transfusions.
Model Cities Initiative federal public safety grant application
Baton Rouge is competing for a share of $300 million in federal funding aimed at cutting violent crime, with a draft budget of about $125 million over three years. The money would fund policing, juvenile diversion, re-entry, behavioral health, and expungement services across multiple agencies and community groups.
Scotlandville health clinic at Jewel J. Newman Community Center
Baton Rouge General will open a clinic inside the Jewel J. Newman Community Center — primary care, a nurse practitioner, mental health services and basic labs — at $5,000 monthly rent through 2030. Councilman Kenney called it a major step for a health-care-desert part of his district.
AXON police technology agreement
Baton Rouge police want to bundle body cameras, in-car cameras, Tasers and records software into one 10-year AXON deal worth up to $31.2 million. The city projects about $22.8 million in savings versus buying separately. It comes back for a public hearing August 12.
