Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Baton Rouge public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
2027 City-Parish Budget
The council approved a $250,000 local match for $750,000 in state capital outlay for Raising Cane's River Center renovations; a critic wanted a private billionaire donor tapped instead.
Bus rapid transit spending versus road repair
A change order pushed the BRT Nicholson route contract toward $52 million, and one resident argued roads lack striping and repair while Councilman Hurst defended the roughly $41-per-rider investment.
City-Parish deconsolidation study
A proposal to have Finance study whether the City of Baton Rouge could financially survive separation from the parish. Supporters say city residents lack a mayor and council solely representing them; critics fear bankruptcy and state takeover, and one speaker wants separate-and-overlapping councils discussed first.
Blight penalty and fee increases
A package of ordinances raises fines for weeds, garbage, dangerous buildings, and property maintenance, plus adds administrative costs to condemnation liens and hearing fees.
Burn Ban
Baton Rouge has banned outdoor burning until further notice because dry conditions have pushed fire risk high. That means no bonfires or leaf burning for now, and ignoring the ban could get you in trouble.
Murphy's Bar expansion and West Chimes Street neighborhood impacts
Murphy's Bar wants to buy the building next door and add an outdoor pavilion, doubling its footprint near LSU. Neighbors and Lotus lounge staff described noise until 2-3 a.m., trash, fights, and discrimination claims; the owner countered with a clean law-enforcement record and sound-mitigation agreements. The commission approved the rezone 7-0, but the Metro Council has final say.
Discovery Baton Rouge school expansion traffic and drainage
The Discovery school wants a 20,000-square-foot middle school classroom building on South Harrell's Ferry Road, but neighbors say carpool lines already block driveways for five minutes at a time and back up traffic to the fire station 500 feet away. The case was deferred 30 days so the school can hold a community meeting.
Residential noise ordinance decibel limits
New residential decibel limits passed as amended at 70 daytime/60 nighttime, born from a lost lawsuit over loud parties. Police still lack decibel meters, so enforcement may lag.
December 12 fire and police tax elections
Voters in Fire District 6 will decide a five-mill property tax in April 2027 to fund fire protection, water supply, and hydrants.
Community Beautification Grants
Baton Rouge is putting $200,000 into grants to fix up the Scotlandville Gateway at Harding Blvd. and I-110. Local organizations and landscaping pros can apply now to help make that entrance look better.
Employee Pay Raises
Baton Rouge just approved pay raises for city workers and the Constable's Office. If you or someone you know works for local government, their paycheck is about to get bigger. It's a direct boost for public employees, funded through the city budget.
City-parish Employee Pay Raises
Baton Rouge just approved raises for all City-Parish employees. The goal is to stop experienced staff from leaving and make city jobs more competitive. If you use city services or know a city worker, this could affect you.
Storm Preparation
Tropical Storm Arthur is bringing heavy rain through Saturday, and Baton Rouge is handing out sandbags now. If you own property or live in a flood-prone spot, grab sandbags and prep before the weather hits—why wait until streets start pooling?
public safety / National Guard deployment
Baton Rouge’s mayor-president says the National Guard could be brought in to back up local police, not take over patrols. It’s a watch item because it affects who’s on your streets and how public safety resources get used.
Violence prevention contract increases
Two violence-prevention contractors got extensions totaling about $70,000, drawing criticism that results aren't proven. Police Chief pushed back that city crime is actually down double digits in most categories.
Library millage renewal canvass
The 9.5-mill, ten-year library tax passed after one resident argued it should be five years and that new buildings aren't needed. Funding keeps the parish library system running and allows land purchase and construction.
Florida Boulevard commercial rezonings (17060 and 17510/17590)
Two stretches of Florida Boulevard east of Stevendale and Old Hammond could shift from rural/residential designations to commercial, including heavy commercial. Neighbors turned out in opposition, but the commission forwarded all four related items to the council unanimously.
Florida Boulevard restaurant alcohol zoning
A commercial suite on Florida Boulevard is now zoned specifically for a restaurant serving alcohol. Staff found the request consistent with the Comprehensive Plan and compatible with surrounding uses.
Home Rule Charter Commission on consolidation
Councilman Hurst's proposal would seat a commission to study whether the consolidated city-parish government is actually working for residents. It's just introduced — a public hearing comes September 23.
Blighted property condemnations
Eleven new condemnation proceedings on abandoned or damaged properties were introduced, and 26 parcels were set up for adjudicated property sales or Mow-to-Own transfers, with hearings September 9 and 23. These affect neglected properties across Districts 2, 5, 7, and 10.
Model Cities Initiative federal public safety grant application
Baton Rouge is competing for a share of $300 million in federal funding aimed at cutting violent crime, with a draft budget of about $125 million over three years. The money would fund policing, juvenile diversion, re-entry, behavioral health, and expungement services across multiple agencies and community groups.
Pettit Road Sand and Gravel Mining
After two deferrals, a 177-acre sand and gravel mine near Comite Drive won approval with a 13-signature neighborhood petition in support and after the operators met with Councilman Kenney. One written objection was received.
Florida Boulevard rezoning and Old Hammond Highway flooding and traffic
Neighbors from Riverview Drive opposed rezoning 17060 Florida Boulevard to commercial, citing 2016 flood losses, a drainage ditch through the property, potential fuel tanks, and brutal traffic on two-lane Old Hammond Highway. The commission deferred the case so the applicant can consider dropping the Old Hammond frontage.
AXON police technology agreement
Baton Rouge police want to bundle body cameras, in-car cameras, Tasers and records software into one 10-year AXON deal worth up to $31.2 million. The city projects about $22.8 million in savings versus buying separately. It comes back for a public hearing August 12.
municipal incorporation / St. George cityhood
St. George Fire Protection District No. 2 wants to issue up to $12.5 million in short-term revenue anticipation notes. The resolution will be heard August 12.
Scenic Highway industrial rezoning
Five parcels along Scenic Highway could shift from a neighborhood-centered future to industrial use. Residents near the corridor may see industrial neighbors move in; supporters argue it matches surrounding industry.
LV Collective Student Housing near Burbank Drive
A high-density multi-family student housing project with commercial space is proposed north of Burbank Drive near Milford Avenue. The commission recommended the rezoning; the Metro Council makes the final call.
Plan Baton Rouge III Small Area Plan
A new plan for downtown's historic core could shape future development, land use, and investment from the river to Choctaw Drive. It now goes to the Metro Council.
